Speed limits & starting grid

Some questions came up regarding the challenge scenario:

1. Will the maximum speed limit be different from 80 km/h at any time. We understand...

Speed profile.

Yes. In the urban scenario the lead vehicle accelerates and this acceleration is less than 1.25 m/s^2. Please note that the functional and safety...

Speed profile.

Are the values of -2.1 m/s^2 (and max acceleration of 1.25 m/s^2) of the lead vehicle also applicable for the other scenario(s)?

Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge

International teams competing to deliver the most effective cooperative vehicle-infrastructure system in predetermined traffic scenarios: that is the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge (GCDC). An international and unique challenge in the field of cooperative driving. The GCDC aims to accelerate the implementation of these systems and contribute significantly to alleviate traffic problems worldwide.

GCDC_vr_001 Those bold enough to take up the challenge will have to negotiate their vehicles as efficiently as possible through a range of predetermined traffic scenarios. The extent to which the traffic flow is improved by this and the speed at which this improvement can be implemented will be uppermost in the judges' minds. The challenge is thus a unique tool for the rapid transfer of research findings to real-life driving conditions.

The Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge.

The challenge, which will take place on a specially-equipped public road network, begins in 2009, with the finals scheduled for 2011. In brief, the timetable is:

  • 8 & 9 December 2009 Workshop: This second workshop will be a further introduction to the goals and objectives of the GCDC and the second opportunity to interact with the organizing committee. There will be discussion forums during which participants will be able to comment on the draft rules and discuss existing technology issues with our technical staff.
  • March 2010: official subscription launch will take place, together with a demo showing the potential of cooperative driving.
  • 2011: Actual highway challenge. Teams from all around the world will participate.

After 2011, the organizers intend to broaden the challenge to a two yearly international event on different continents in which new and gradually more challenging traffic situations will be addressed to stimulate the development of cooperative driving technology in the longer term.

The participants
GCDC participation is open to universities, companies and research institutes. This challenge gives the opportunity to develop new technologies and demonstrate them in real-life situations at a series of high-profile events that will attract international media as well as industry and government representatives from various countries. Participants will compete with some of the most highly respected R&D teams from around the world. Competitors may enter more than one vehicle to demonstrate their technologies; but, we envision establishing an interface control document early in the process such that vehicles from all competitors can operate safely in proximity to one another and interchange information V2V and V2I.

In May 2009 the first workshop took place with participants from Australia, the US and Japan. This shows that the challenge is something the automobile industry is ready for. The GCDC now has 20 teams interested in participating in this challenge.
