Helmond, 7 December 2009
On 8 and 9 December 2009, the international community in the field of Cooperative Driving Systems will be brought together at TNO in Helmond. Some 80 representatives of world-renowned businesses, knowledge institutions and universities from eighteen countries, spread over four continents, will on that occasion be discussing the details of the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge (GCDC). The GCDC is a unique challenge, the objective of which is to accelerate the development and introduction of cooperative driving which in turn will lead to better traffic flow and safety, reduced environmental burdens and increased comfort in traffic. “We are inviting the smartest brains from all round the world to come up with the best and most innovative solutions for mobility and traffic”, explained Egbert-Jan Sol, CTO at TNO Institute for Industry and Technology.
With the GCDC challenge, TNO is encouraging innovative developments in the field of cooperative driving, suitable for use on all types of road vehicles. Characteristic of these cooperative vehicle systems is that all types of vehicle are linked and communicate with one another and with the roadside infrastructure, in an open system. The GCDC will invite the world’s smartest brains to come up with the best solutions, through open cooperation, and then test those systems in open competition in a very realistic setting.
Participants in the workshop include Toyota and Renault, the research institutes DLR, Fraunhofer and NICTA and the universities of Berlin, Illinois Chicago, Genoa, Eindhoven, Delft and Twente. Egbert-Jan Sol continued, “The majority of leading businesses, institutes and universities in the field of cooperative driving will be in attendance. Together, during this meeting, we will draw up the definitive regulations and techniques for the GCDC, after which the participating teams can focus their work on concrete results. Official entries for the GCDC can then be submitted starting in March 2010. The challenge is to be held for the first time in September 2010 in the Helmond-Eindhoven region, and will be organised by TNO and HTAS.”
