Registration opens for international CDC2011 (EN)

March 24th, 2010

Starting Tuesday 23 March, it will be possible to register for the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge (GCDC) 2011, a unique competitive event between knowledge institutes, universities and businesses. The event aims to accelerate the development and introduction of cooperative driving.

Cooperative driving leads to improved traffic flow and safety, reduced environmental impact and greater driving comfort, as vehicles are able to communicate with each other and with roadside infrastructure. This will be the first time that TNO and HTAS will organize the GCDC. Technological solutions already developed in the area of cooperative driving will be highlighted by this event, held on a stretch of road between Eindhoven and Helmond (The Netherlands).

All teams that wish to participate can register for the challenge online as well as at the GCDC stand in hall 9 – 305 at InterTraffic.

TNO aims to encourage innovative developments in the area of cooperative driving which can be applied to all types of vehicles on the road. Via the GCDC initiative, TNO is inviting the best brains in the world to openly work together and think up the best solutions and test them in an open competition. This will take place in a realistic setting, namely a stretch of the A270 motorway between Eindhoven and Helmond.

Set-up

The GCDC organization will allow the participating teams to carry out a so-called shock wave test. During this test, the vehicles will drive independently separated by only a short distance, using innovative technology that they have themselves developed, with the aim of reducing fuel consumption as well as traffic congestion. To simulate realistic conditions as much as possible, a test will also be carried out to determine how the vehicles respond when the leading vehicle suddenly significantly reduces its speed. The teams will have the opportunity to test their Car-to-Car (C2C) and Car-to-Infrastructure(C2I) technology. At the GCDC.net website, participating teams can access all the documents needed to participate in the GCDC 2011. After accessing the rules of play, the teams can get down to work in a practical and focused fashion.

Expectations

Egbert-Jan Sol, CTO at TNO Science and Industry, expects that “the majority of the most important companies, institutes and universities active in the area of cooperative driving will register for the GCDC 2011.” At the end of 2009, renowned organizations such as Toyota and Renault, research institutes such as DLR, Fraunhofer and NICTA, and the universities of Berlin, Chicago Illinois, Genoa, Eindhoven, Delft and Twente took part in workshops in preparation for the GCDC.

About cooperative driving

Cooperative driving is a promising technology for reducing traffic jams, limiting CO2 emissions and preventing traffic accidents. Cooperative systems offer the drivers, road authorities and the infrastructure more information about the vehicles, their location, their intention and the road conditions – there is connectivity between vehicles, and between vehicles and roadside infrastructure. This enables more efficient and safer traffic as well as early warnings for upcoming traffic situations (like incidents and hazards).

About GCDC

The Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge, GCDC, aims to accelerate the introduction of cooperative vehicle technologies to contribute significantly to the alleviation of traffic problems and improved traffic safety. Teams from all over the world will be competing to deliver the most effective cooperative driving system. HTAS and TNO, two leading Dutch automotive research institutes are organizing the challenge. The challenge will consist of several scenarios in which vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications and cooperative behaviours will be evaluated to demonstrate improved

safety on the road and a reduction in travel time over congested highways. A prize pool of approximately 500.000 euro’s has been established. The challenge begins in 2009 and the finals are scheduled for 2011. In March 2010, a GCDC demonstration will be conducted as part of an intelligent vehicles exposition in Amsterdam. The finals will take place on a specially-equipped public road network (on the A270 between the cities of Eindhoven and Helmond).

About HTAS

High Tech Automotive Systems is a Dutch automotive innovation program empowered by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs together with industry, knowledge institutes and university partners. The focus areas of HTAS are Driving Guidance and Efficient Vehicles.

In addition HTAS has an ‘Enablers’ program for automotive education, knowledge transfer and business development.

About TNO

Developing, integrating and applying knowledge: it is this combination that differentiates  TNO from other knowledge institutions. By encouraging the effective interplay of knowledge areas, TNO generates creative and practicable innovations: new products, services and  processes, fully customized for business and government.
