Speed limits & starting grid

Some questions came up regarding the challenge scenario:

1. Will the maximum speed limit be different from 80 km/h at any time. We understand...

Speed profile.

Yes. In the urban scenario the lead vehicle accelerates and this acceleration is less than 1.25 m/s^2. Please note that the functional and safety...

Are the values of -2.1 m/s^2 (and max acceleration of 1.25 m/s^2) of the lead vehicle also applicable for the other scenario(s)?

“Cooperation for competition!” GCDC Technology Workshop 2011

From 19 – 21 January the first GCDC Technology Workshop 2011 was held in Helmond, The Netherlands. About 30 participants from all 10 international participating teams made their way to TNO at the High Tech Automotive Campus. Their main goal? To get their wireless communication equipment and protocols up and running, and to test it with the other teams and implementation used by the GCDC organization. Furthermore, Jan Huissoon of the University of Waterloo in Canada attended the workshop as a possible participant to the GCDC.  Besides the communication, other aspects were also discussed such as, the status of the GCDC organization, rules and judging, RTK GPS, roadside infrastructure, insurance and legal issues.

From the moment of their arrival, all teams worked very hard, which resulted in many small and big successes. The organization was impressed with the eagerness and willingness to help other teams. There were many good conversations, discussions and suggestions to make the GCDC better and better.

The first challenge set-out by the organization was planned on the evening of the first day: GCDC (Grand Cooperative Dinner Creation). We can say that all team members successfully succeeded this first GCDC challenge! Everybody enjoyed this social event and it was a perfect way to get to know each other. Interested in what we prepared? You can find the recipe and some pictures here.

On the communication side a significant amount of work was done, although a lot of additional work is still required. As a result, all teams now have working 802.11p/FAST communications, up to the level of a running CALM Daemon. Coding and decoding messages according to the GCDC interaction protocol is something most teams still have to work on. A GCDC test environment (software) is available to test the encoding en decoding of messages. TNO will continue to support the teams regarding the communications.
Reference measurements were performed by 4 teams along the A270 test-track to test the GPS performance using both RTK equipment from the GCDC organization and GPS equipment from the teams. These results will be analyzed supported by TNO.

The rules and judging discussions have resulted in a more in depth analysis of the judgment criteria. In the coming weeks measurement and simulation data will be used to further specify the details and update the rules & technology document. Furthermore, questions raised by several teams concerning legal and insurance issues were discussed and clarified by legal and insurance officers from TNO.

We hope all teams appreciated the support from the GCDC organization to make this workshop to a success. We are looking forward to meet the teams again in May, to show the world how we can Cooperate and Compete at the same time, to pave the way for cooperative mobility!
